The Government of India honoured him with the Padma Bhushan in 2001 and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2002 for his contributions towards Indian cinema. Dev Anand died in London at the age of 88 on 3 December 2011 (4th December 2011 by Indian time) due to a cardiac arrest. He was reportedly in London for a medical check up. In 2000, he was awarded the Indo-American Association "Star of the Millennium" Award in the Silicon Valley, California. Donna Ferrar, Member New York State Assembly, honoured him with a "New York State Assembly Citation" for his 'Outstanding Contribution to the Cinematic Arts Worthy of the Esteem and Gratitude of the Great State of New York' on 1 May 2001. Young and attractive Leela has three options for marriage. The first one is Shyam, an artistic painter with whom Leela falls in love at first sight. Unknown to her, Shyam is a cheat. Unaware of this fact, Leela meets Sita, a queen, who takes her to a palatial house. Here she meets Sita's son Kumar who falls in love with her. Leela tells him that she loves Shyam. AMAR PREM is the story of three innocent souls--who by circumstances come near each other and are bound by the thread of eternal love. Pushpa - Sharmila Tagore a simple housewife from a village is thrown out of her house by her husband because she could not have a child. Dejected she comes to her own village and meets a croom nepal babu - who takes her to calcutta to give her a job. There she is cheated by him and is forced to take shelter in prostitute quarters. Anand - Rajesh Khanna A rich man of the city is neglected by his ultra modern wife and has no place to go. One day while passing through the same locality he hears a song and is attracted by the beautiful voice. He meets pushpa and both are tied to each other. Nandoo - a child who stays nearby - is always ill-treated by his step-mother. He comes in pushpa's life and finds a mother in her. But fate had something else to offer. They are all separated and how they are again united after ages - that is what you will see in Amar Prem.
